The final project for the Shove Media internship started as another modelling exercise. Instead of a chair though, I was to model a bed – I ended up choosing the sleek ‘Nelson Thin Edge Bed’. The modelling process went a lot smoother than with the chair due to the more straightforward forms involved, but I did get to try out something wholly new to me when it came to creating the bedding itself – Marvellous Designer. The fabric simulation software was wonderfully powerful and with a few tutorials I was able to create the pillows, duvet and mattress with relative ease.
At first, I only intended to render the finished bed in a similar studio set-up to the Eames DAR, but this evolved into making a full bedroom visualisation so that I could experience creating an interior piece as well as an exterior during the internship.
I ended up modelling the bedroom largely on a nicely minimalist home I came across by Cornerstone Architects, simply called ‘Hill Country Residence’. The prominence of the bed in this photo as well as the inclusion of a single chair would allow me to highlight my Nelson Thin Edge model as well as including the Eames DAR. Whilst the bedroom I modelled is indeed very similar to that of the picture, I tailored it more to my liking – changing the bedside tables, featuring the wooden walls on both sides of the room and modifying the end of the wall so as to hint at another area around the corner of the wall.
As is probably to be expected, I found this interior scene a lot more challenging than the exterior, mainly due to the lighting. I chose a night-time setting so I could focus on interior lighting conditions, but it ended up taking a while for me to get it just right. Nonetheless, it was very good experience and I was very pleased with the end result.
