The second project I tackled during the internship was smaller in scope than the housing one and focused more on modelling. For it, I was to model, render and post-produce a visualisation of a chair – in this case, the beloved chair of architects everywhere, the Eames DAR.
The chair presented me with some difficulty initially when modelling due to it’s more organic form, as up until now I’d only really been modelling very geometric objects. Resultantly, as a modelling exercise I learned a lot.
Rendering and post-production wise, it was a lot simpler than the house as I only had a very small number of materials to work with. These materials though, I spent a lot of time on getting just right, due to the much closer focus on the object. The fibreglass seat material for example included small elements of the fibreglass texture visible in the reflections – far subtler than anything attempted in the previous project.
The room set-up was simple for the project – a basic box room of wooden flooring with a large window through which the lighting for the scene comes. On reflection, I feel now I should’ve added some skirting for the walls, as it does appear a bit ‘wrong’ to have the wall meet the floor as flush as that. As issues go though, it’s minor.
If I could do it again, I’d probably spend even more time on the seat material as whilst it looks pretty good, I’m still not wholly convinced by it. The wooden floor as well is a touch unconvincing in my eyes. Overall though, a fun little project with a nice result.
